Earthquake in Puerto Rico
This time, the earthquake again rocked Puerto Rico. An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 in the modified Mercalli scale was recorded in Puerto Rico with its epicenter in the town of Moca, said Gisela Báez, a geologist at the Puerto Rico Seismic Network.
This information corresponds to the final report by 3:05 am today, Sunday. Previously, Baez had reported that the magnitude was 5.8. The earthquake occurred at the 1:16 am in the latitude 18.4, longitude 67.1 west, 65 miles from San Juan. No tsunami hazard in Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.
“We had 3,000 reports from people who felt” he added.
“I do not expect major quakes with the data we have. People should be quiet in their homes. It is very important to remain calm, to reassure the children and the elderly, and we are more attentive to information,” Báez.
“This earthquake is not for the same fault system. They are faults that are rather distant and unrelated,” he said on a possible connection with the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.
The depth of the quake was 140 kilometers. “This is very deep and gives a chance to feel seismic waves far too”, he specified the geologist, who mentioned the municipalities of Aguada, Anasco, Mayaguez, Arecibo and Utuado as areas where he felt the tremor, with no major damage so far.
“This is a moderate earthquake. Do not expect harm,” he said. He noted that a magnitude 7 and up can be dangerous, but so far can not be determined who has projected that happening.
